About SGC

A leading full-service general contractor and construction management firm with exceptional quality standards, since 1976 SG Cunningham has helped clients bring innovative designs to life, building inspirational spaces across Southwestern Ontario. Through a company-wide focus on proactive and entrepreneurial thinking, our team approaches every project with a vision of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

We aim to exceed our clients’ expectations by delivering first-class service through constructive collaboration, diligent management and effective communication.

George Cunningham initially started SG Cunningham as a home renovation business. As a craftsman and perfectionist, George set high standards and his team strived for excellence in every aspect of their work. By 1986, the company pivoted as residential clients who owned businesses wanted SG Cunningham to manage their commercial renovations. From there, we expanded into industrial, commercial and institutional construction which, to this day, remains a key segment of our business.

SG Cunningham is a family-owned and operated business, with three generations of Cunninghams at the helm.

At SGC, we put our values at the forefront of everything we do. Our motto is: “We’re going to do it once and we’re going to do it right.” Our clients choose us because we deliver on this promise. We operate with integrity; we have high standards, excellent attention to detail and we always go the extra mile to ensure our clients’ satisfaction.
We strive to stay on top of the latest training, certifications and industry knowledge to complete projects that are state-of-the-art for sustainability, technology, design and materials. We have completed numerous LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) projects and were the first Canadian construction firm to achieve LEED v4 Silver certification for a project.
You will never hear us say, “this can’t be done.” We are solution providers and we will do everything possible to execute on the dreams you have for your space.
We think of ourselves as a “mid-sized gem” – the professional team you’ve been searching for; the team that will help make your life easier and your construction project flow smoothly from conception to completion. We provide a level of personal service and attention to detail that is unparalleled in our industry.
We have a reputation for being leaders in health and safety. In 2018, our firm was awarded WSIB’s Health and Safety Leadership Award, presented to one company across all sectors in Ontario and we continue to exceed industry standards.
As a certified diverse-owned business through WEConnect International, we promote diversity in the construction industry. It is important to us that our team, suppliers and subcontractor base reflects the diversity of our customer base, and represents the communities in which we live and work.

Building Community

We believe giving back is part of good corporate citizenship, and an ethos of giving back is a major part of our company culture.

SGC supports many charitable organizations in a variety of ways, but our Community Project is a special initiative, close to our hearts, and has the greatest impact. Each year, we work with one not-for-profit organization embarking on a construction project. We designate this our Community Project and give a portion of our profits back to the organization. Our team also rallies our subtrades and suppliers to do the same. This support can make a sizeable financial impact. In past years, our Community Project has supported Strong Start to Reading, the Child Witness Centre, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, Centre in the Square and the Kitchener Public Library.
